Danielle Bastien – Mobile Bearing Hip™ Recipient

From ‘Crippled’ to Enabled: Mobile Bearing Hips™ Help Propel 57-Year-Old Forward.

Danielle Bastien’s life changed in an instant—a missed step, a twisted fall, a violent landing on her right hip, and later, a shooting pain that radiated from her groin through her hip, and down her right side. Five years, 11 practitioners, and several misdirected diagnoses later, the pain—which was so disabling the once active, 57-year-old sales representative couldn’t sleep, walk, exercise, bend, or even get up from her chair—has ended.

“It took five years to figure out I needed two hip replacements,” says Danielle. “The first orthopaedic surgeon I consulted told me I had moderate arthritis, and was not a candidate for surgery. I saw three chiropractors, went to physical therapy twice, went to an acupuncturist, had my sacrum adjusted, and even consulted a neurosurgeon for a pinched nerve before I discovered just how badly the arthritis had progressed in both hips.”

“It became more severe, because we weren’t treating the root of the problem. We were just treating the symptoms,” she says. In less than three years she went from “moderate arthritis” to no cartilage at all. X-rays revealed “very old hips,” which needed to be replaced. So, she found a highly regarded orthopaedic surgeon she trusted and scheduled surgery right away.

The new Stryker Mobile Bearing Hips™ her surgeon used are built to allow for more natural movement. They are designed to fit together in a unique way to allow for a more natural range of motion1, more resistance to wear2, and greater joint stability3.

“It was pretty grim before the operation,” says Danielle. “I was totally crippled and in pain, with nothing to look forward to. There’s nothing more wonderful than going from not being able to walk and hurting 24/7, to waking up from surgery and within months being able to walk, exercise, and have a life.”

With renewed energy, Danielle found a new job and her social life has improved as well. “Now that I can stand up straight and get back to exercising, people tell me I’ve lost weight and look younger,” she says. “I was bent; a little crooked, too. Walking normally can take off 15-20 years!”

Before, her friend had to pull her out of the car or off the sofa. Now, she’s pulling herself through the pool twice a week, for an hour at a time, and working out.

“I’m so happy to be back and better than ever,” says Danielle.

Individual results may vary. Not all patients will have the same post-operative recovery and activity level. See your orthopaedic surgeon to discuss your own potential benefits and risks.

Stryker® Orthopaedics Restoration® ADM X3® 28 mm ID acetabular inserts made of X3® Gas Plasma Sterilized UHMWPE, show a 97% reduction in volumetric wear rate versus 28 mm ID Restoration® ADM Duration Gamma Radiation Sterilized UHWMPE. Both ADM constructs utilized a 54 mm OD shell and the inserts were approximately 9.9 mm thick. Testing was conducted under multi-axial hip joint simulation for 5 million cycles using a 28 mm CoCr modular femoral head articulating counterface and calf serum lubricant. Volumetric wear rates were 109.7+6.0 mm3/106 cycles for Duration and X3® polyethylene insert test samples. Although in-vitro hip wear simulation methods have not been show to quantitatively predict clinical wear performance, the current model has been able to reproduce correct wear resistance rankings for some materials with documented clinical results. a, b, c
